Rural projects can offer very different experiences. Some involve agriculture or gardening, while others focus on community life, environmental activities, renovation, animal care, hospitality or practical help around a property.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date, exact location and current conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm the activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, local transport, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity.

Remote locations and practical arrangements

A rural project may be far from public transport, shops, healthcare or reliable internet access. Before accepting a placement, ask for the exact location and confirm how you will arrive, how often local transport is available and how you could leave independently if necessary.

Also check access to drinking water, electricity, heating or cooling, mobile coverage and medical assistance where these are relevant to the location and season.

Do not assume that a project described as rural or close to nature is necessarily isolated or difficult to reach. Conditions vary considerably, so verify them directly with the host.

Rural exchange or regular work?

Rural opportunities can range from informal household and community exchanges to productive work on farms, guesthouses or other income-generating properties.

If the role involves regular duties that would normally be performed by paid staff, check whether the arrangement may be treated as employment under local labour and immigration rules. Accommodation or meals do not automatically make productive work a volunteer activity.
