Off-grid living
Off-grid living volunteer opportunities
Explore volunteer exchanges at off-grid homes, farms, eco-centres, intentional communities and remote accommodation projects around the world.
This page brings together the opportunities currently listed on Voluntouring.org under the off-grid tag. Open any listing below to learn about the project, activities, accommodation, meals, practical conditions and contact details provided by the host.
What does off-grid living mean?
Off-grid generally describes a home, building or community that operates without relying on the main electricity grid. Electricity may be generated locally using solar panels, wind turbines, micro-hydroelectric systems, generators or a combination of technologies and battery storage.
The term is also commonly used for places that manage some of their own water, heating, sanitation, food production or waste systems. However, an off-grid project is not necessarily completely self-sufficient, and the facilities available can vary considerably.
For a technical introduction to local electricity generation and systems that can operate independently from the main grid, see the U.S. Department of Energy overview.
What can an off-grid exchange involve?
Activities may include gardening, food growing, animal care, natural building, carpentry, painting, maintenance, preparing firewood, collecting water, cleaning shared spaces or helping with renewable energy systems. Some listings may instead involve housesitting, hospitality, retreats or looking after a remote property.
Tasks and facilities vary between projects. Volunteers should not undertake electrical, construction or machinery work without suitable experience, supervision and safety equipment.
How to use this page
Choose the listing that interests you and check its publication or latest update date. Some older opportunities may still be available, so contact the host directly to confirm. Look for the Contact details section, where you may find an official website, email address, telephone number, social media page or application form.
Not every host can answer every message, particularly in remote places with limited internet access. If you do not receive a response, consider another listing and read the Voluntouring FAQ.
What to confirm before travelling
- How electricity is generated and whether power is available throughout the day
- Whether drinking water, showers, toilets and laundry facilities are available
- What heating, cooking and refrigeration facilities are provided
- Whether accommodation is in a room, cabin, caravan, van, tent or another structure
- Whether telephone coverage and internet access are available
- How to reach the project and whether personal transport is necessary
- Which tools, protective equipment or suitable clothing you need
- What activities, hours, days off, meals and house rules apply
- Whether emergency assistance and medical services are accessible
Accommodation, meals and practical conditions
Some opportunities provide food and accommodation at no cost in exchange for voluntary help. Others may provide accommodation only or request a daily or monthly contribution. Confirm every condition directly with the host before making travel plans.
Off-grid accommodation can involve limited electricity, composting toilets, outdoor showers, wood heating, restricted water use or reduced internet access. These conditions are not necessarily negative, but they should be explained clearly before arrival.
Some opportunities take place within commercial accommodation businesses or involve activities that may be treated as work under local rules. Check what applies to your nationality and destination, and read Voluntouring’s guidance on safety and legality.
Voluntouring is not a travel agency, employer or placement service. It does not manage applications, payments, visas, insurance or travel arrangements. Volunteers and hosts communicate directly.
