NGOs 🕊️
Explore NGO volunteering opportunities with non-governmental organisations working in education, community development, health, environmental protection, social inclusion, humanitarian support, animal welfare and other public-interest fields.
NGOs range from small locally based organisations to international networks, so volunteer roles, funding models, accommodation and participation conditions can vary considerably between projects.
What is an NGO? 🕊️
NGO stands for non-governmental organisation. The term generally refers to an organisation that operates independently from direct government control and works towards social, humanitarian, environmental, educational, cultural or other public-interest goals. Many NGOs are also non-profit organisations, but the terms are not always legally interchangeable and definitions vary between countries.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the organisation’s current activities, volunteer role, weekly hours, supervision, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or contributions before applying. If legal or charitable status matters to your decision, ask for the organisation’s registered name and relevant registration details rather than assuming that the label “NGO” confirms formal registration.
If a fee, contribution or deposit is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the cancellation and refund conditions. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not by itself constitute verification or endorsement of an organisation or programme.
Safeguarding and professional roles
Some NGO projects involve children, vulnerable people, healthcare, counselling or other sensitive activities. Check the required qualifications, safeguarding procedures, screening and professional supervision, and do not take on responsibilities beyond your training or legal authorisation. For projects involving children, see Voluntouring’s guide to safer alternatives to volunteering with children.
