What is a monk? 📿
A monk is a member of a religious or contemplative community who follows a disciplined way of life shaped by the rules and practices of a particular tradition. Monastic life may involve prayer, meditation, study, service, communal living or periods of solitude. Practices, titles, vows and daily routines differ considerably between religious traditions and communities.
Living alongside a monastic community
A volunteer stay does not usually mean becoming a monk or formally joining a religious order. Visitors may simply share part of the community’s daily routine while contributing practical help and observing the rules that apply to guests.
Before applying, ask what participation is expected in meditation, prayer, ceremonies, silence, communal meals or other practices. Also check rules concerning clothing, diet, alcohol, smoking, phones, relationships and access to particular areas.
