Long-term volunteering ⏳

Explore long-term volunteering opportunities for people able to commit to the same project, community or organisation for an extended period.
Longer placements can be found in farms, NGOs, communities, education, healthcare, European programmes and other projects where continuity, training or familiarity with the role makes a longer stay particularly relevant.
What is long-term volunteering? ⏳
Long-term volunteering involves committing to the same volunteer project for an extended period, usually measured in months rather than days or a few weeks. Longer placements can allow more time for orientation, training, regular responsibilities and continuity within the project.
Long-term volunteering and long-term travel
A long volunteer placement is not the same as a long journey. Someone may volunteer with one organisation for six months, while another person may travel for a year and join several shorter projects along the way. For articles, practical guides and stories about extended journeys, browse the Long-term travel section.
There is no universal duration that makes every placement “long-term”. Pay attention to the minimum commitment stated by the host and whether the role genuinely depends on continuity, training or ongoing responsibilities.
How to use this page
Check the publication date, required minimum stay, exact activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, supervision and any fees, stipend or other financial arrangements. For commitments lasting several months, also consider personal expenses, access to healthcare and how easily you could change your plans if the placement does not work out.
A host offering a long stay does not automatically mean that your immigration status permits months of volunteering or work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host.. Check the rules that apply to your nationality, destination and activities before committing. Voluntouring’s volunteer and work exchange visa guide provides a general starting point.
