Long journeys can involve backpacking, volunteering, work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host., hospitality stays, seasonal work, walking or cycling, van travel and periods of living temporarily in different places. The practical arrangements vary considerably from one traveller and destination to another.
What is long-term travel? 🎒🌍
Long-term travel means spending an extended period away from your usual home while travelling between places or living temporarily in different destinations. There is no universal minimum duration: what distinguishes a longer journey is often the need to plan everyday life, finances, accommodation and travel arrangements over a much longer period than an ordinary holiday.
Long-term travel, volunteering and slow travel
Volunteering or work exchange can form part of a longer journey, but long-term travel does not necessarily involve volunteering. For opportunities that specifically require an extended commitment to one project, see Long-term volunteering.
Long-term travel also overlaps with Slow travel, but the two are not identical. Long-term travel mainly refers to duration, while slow travel is more about pace and spending more time in fewer places.
Planning a longer journey
For journeys lasting several months, think realistically about your budget and emergency reserve, passport and visa limits, healthcare and insurance, accommodation, access to money and communication, and how you would change plans or return home unexpectedly.
If you plan to volunteer, work, work remotely or use work exchanges along the way, check the rules for each country and activity rather than assuming that tourist entry automatically permits them. Conditions can change, so use current official sources when making immigration, healthcare or safety decisions.
