What are intentional communities?
Intentional communities are groups of people who choose to live together or cooperate closely around shared values, goals or ways of life. Their common purpose may be ecological, social, cultural, spiritual, educational or economic.
There is no single model. Decisions about property, finances, governance, work, meals, privacy and shared responsibilities can vary considerably from one community to another.
Different types of intentional communities
Intentional communities may include ecovillages, cohousing projects, housing cooperatives, communes, spiritual communities, educational centres and other shared-living projects. Some place particular emphasis on sustainability, while others focus on mutual support, affordable housing, personal development or a specific cultural or spiritual vision.
A community may consist of only a few residents or several hundred people. Larger networks can also be organised as federations of smaller communities.
Intentional communities, ecovillages and cohousing
An ecovillage is generally an intentional community in which ecological sustainability and regeneration play a central role. However, not every intentional community is an ecovillage.
Cohousing combines private homes with shared spaces and active participation in community life. Residents usually retain their own independent households while cooperating in the management of common areas and activities.
