Grassroots volunteering 🌱🤝
Explore grassroots volunteer opportunities with locally initiated or community-led projects working directly on issues that affect their neighbourhood, village, community or local environment.
Grassroots projects can work in many different areas, including education, community development, environmental activities, social inclusion, local food systems and youth initiatives. What connects them is not a particular activity or budget, but a bottom-up approach with strong local involvement.
What is a grassroots project? 🌱🤝
A grassroots project develops from the local level rather than being directed primarily by a large external institution. It is usually closely connected with the people or place concerned and may be led by residents, local associations, community groups or small locally rooted organisations. Being small, independent or non-profit does not automatically make a project grassroots.
Grassroots projects and NGOs
Some grassroots initiatives are registered NGOs or non-profit organisations, while others are informal community groups or local associations. At the same time, not every NGO is grassroots: organisations can operate nationally or internationally without being locally initiated or community-led.
For projects where community participation or shared community life is the main feature rather than grassroots organisation itself, you can also explore Community volunteer projects.
