Gender equality 🌍👩⚖️🏳️🌈
Explore gender equality volunteer opportunities where volunteers can support projects addressing gender-based discrimination, unequal opportunities, women’s and girls’ empowerment, gender-based violence, education, advocacy or related community initiatives.
Activities vary considerably. Some organisations focus on awareness and education, while others work on economic inclusion, leadership, community outreach, research or sexual and reproductive health and rights where these issues are directly connected with gender equality.
What counts as gender equality volunteering? ⚖️
Gender equality volunteering involves projects or activities that directly address unequal rights, opportunities, treatment or participation related to gender. This may include women’s and girls’ empowerment, prevention of gender-based violence, equal access to education or livelihoods, gender-related awareness and advocacy, or other clearly defined work addressing gender inequality.
Gender equality, women’s empowerment and LGBTQ+ inclusion
These areas can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Women empowerment focuses specifically on improving opportunities, participation or resources for women and girls. LGBTQ+ opportunities include hosts and projects that explicitly describe themselves as inclusive or supportive of LGBTQ+ volunteers and communities.
An LGBTQ-friendly host does not automatically belong in the Gender equality archive. This page is intended for opportunities where gender equality itself is part of the project, activities or mission relevant to the volunteer role.
For a broader introduction to gender, sexuality, inclusion and typical volunteer activities, read the Gender equality and sexuality volunteer projects guide.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current activities, required skills, supervision, working hours, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or compensation directly with the organisation. Projects involving violence, health, counselling, legal support or other sensitive situations may require professional qualifications, safeguarding procedures and clearly defined volunteer boundaries.
Volunteers should not replace trained professionals in counselling, medical, legal or safeguarding roles. When projects involve vulnerable participants, ask how privacy, consent, supervision and participant safety are managed.
