These terms can overlap but do not mean the same thing. A freelancer works independently for clients or organisations. A remote worker performs work away from a traditional workplace and may still be an employee. A digital nomad uses location-flexible work to live or travel in different places and may be a freelancer, employee, business owner or another type of remote professional.
Freelance work should also be distinguished from online volunteering. A volunteer may contribute skills such as writing, translation, design or social media without being hired as a freelancer.
