What is forestry? 🌲
Forestry involves the management and stewardship of forests and other wooded land. Depending on the project, this can include caring for trees, maintaining forest areas, monitoring forest conditions, supporting restoration, managing trails or access, assisting forest nurseries and carrying out other practical work connected with the long-term management of woodland.
Forestry, reforestation and agroforestry
These areas can overlap but are not identical. Reforestation focuses on restoring tree cover where forests have been lost or damaged. Agroforestry combines trees or other woody plants with crops and/or livestock. Forestry is broader and can include the ongoing management, protection and care of existing forests as well as some restoration activities.
Volunteer tasks may include tree and seedling care, forest restoration, trail or erosion-control work, removing invasive vegetation, maintaining forest infrastructure, assisting nurseries, monitoring forest conditions or supporting trained forestry staff. Read the individual listing carefully, as simply being located in a forest does not mean that forestry work is involved.
