On Voluntouring.org, the term refers broadly to families who spend extended periods travelling and may combine slow travel with volunteering, cultural exchange, camper or van life, homeschooling, unschooling or worldschooling. There is no single lifestyle or educational model that all travelling families follow.
Family travel and volunteering
Some hosts explicitly welcome adults travelling with children, while other posts in this archive are interviews or stories about families who have used volunteering and hospitality exchanges during long journeys. Family-friendly does not automatically mean that children participate in volunteer duties.
Voluntouring.org currently publishes volunteering and work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. opportunities for adults aged 18 and over. Children may travel with their family where a host can appropriately accommodate them, but volunteer responsibilities should remain with the adults.
How to use this page
For volunteer exchanges, confirm that the host genuinely welcomes families and ask about private space, sleeping arrangements, meals, working hours for the adults, transport, internet access and nearby services. Families using homeschooling or worldschooling should also check any education or residency requirements relevant to their own circumstances.
