This is a broad environmental archive. Projects may be run by NGOs, community organisations, research groups, farms, municipalities or other hosts, but the environmental component should be a genuine part of the project or volunteer role rather than simply a general “green” description.
What counts as environmental volunteering? 🌳
Environmental volunteering includes practical or educational activities intended to address environmental issues, protect or restore natural areas, reduce pollution, support more sustainable resource use or improve understanding of environmental topics. A farm, retreat, tourism business or community should not receive this tag simply because it uses words such as “eco”, “green” or “sustainable” without a concrete environmental activity or objective.
A broad environmental category
Activities may include habitat restoration, tree planting, cleanups, environmental education, land stewardship, citizen science, sustainable agriculture or other practical environmental work. More specific tags such as Conservation, Ecology and Marine conservation should also be used when the project clearly fits those subjects.
Environmental claims can vary in quality. If a project describes an activity as ecological, regenerative, sustainable or conservation-focused, ask what is actually being done, who supervises it and how the results or environmental outcomes are assessed.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current activities, weekly hours, supervision, accommodation, meals, minimum stay, location and any fees or contributions directly with the host. For specialist activities involving wildlife, boats, diving, machinery, pesticides or remote fieldwork, also confirm the required training, protective equipment and insurance.
If the opportunity involves regular productive work for a commercial farm, tourism business or other income-generating organisation, check the relevant labour and immigration requirements. See also Voluntouring’s safety and legality guidance.
