An activity being described as ecological, green or conservation-focused does not automatically mean that it has a positive environmental impact.

For example, tree planting should consider appropriate species, local ecology and long-term maintenance. Habitat restoration may require specialist knowledge, and wildlife activities can involve permits, monitoring protocols or restrictions on direct contact.

Before joining, consider asking what the project’s goals are, who supervises the work, how results are monitored and whether local communities, researchers or relevant authorities are involved where appropriate.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Outdoor work and safety

Environmental projects can involve heat, cold, sun exposure, insects, uneven terrain, water, tools, heavy lifting or remote locations. Ask what clothing, equipment, protective measures and training are required.

If activities involve boats, diving, climbing, chainsaws, pesticides, controlled burns, wildlife handling or other specialist tasks, confirm the required experience, supervision and insurance before participating.

For remote projects, also check access to drinking water, healthcare, communication, transport and emergency procedures.

Environmental volunteering and local work rules

Some environmental projects are clearly community or non-profit initiatives, while others may take place within farms, tourism businesses or other income-generating activities.

If participants carry out regular productive work for a commercial organisation, local labour and immigration rules may apply even when no salary is paid.
