Cleaning can be part of a wider volunteer or hospitality exchange at hostels, farms, retreats, community projects, shelters and other shared living environments. The exact duties vary considerably, so always read the individual listing carefully.

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.
Before applying, confirm the cleaning duties, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Shared chores or housekeeping work?
Routine cleaning of shared kitchens, bedrooms or communal areas can be a normal part of living together in a volunteer exchange. This is different from being responsible for regular housekeeping shifts that support the daily operation of a commercial accommodation business.
If the role involves cleaning guest rooms, bathrooms, laundry or other areas on a fixed schedule at a hostel, hotel, guesthouse or similar business, ask whether the arrangement may be treated as employment under local labour and immigration rules.
Accommodation or meals do not automatically make regular productive work a volunteer activity.
Cleaning tasks and safety
Cleaning duties may include:
- keeping shared rooms and common areas tidy;
- cleaning kitchens, bathrooms or accommodation spaces;
- laundry and basic housekeeping;
- cleaning animal shelters, barns or farm areas;
- general organisation and maintenance of shared spaces.
Ask what cleaning products, protective equipment and training are provided. Volunteers should not handle hazardous chemicals, biological waste or other high-risk materials without appropriate instructions and protection.
