Boat is used here as a broad maritime theme and may include vessels of different sizes. Sailing is more specific and refers to activities involving sailing vessels or learning to sail. A project can therefore be relevant to both themes, while some ship-based opportunities may involve maintenance, heritage or community activities without active sailing.
Life and work aboard
Living or working on a vessel can involve shared sleeping areas, limited personal space, changing weather and movement at sea. Before joining, ask about sleeping arrangements, meals, drinking water, bathrooms, communication, shore access and what happens if weather or technical conditions change the planned route.
Boat-based activities can also involve ropes, decks, climbing, tools, machinery or working near water. Volunteers should receive appropriate safety information, supervision and equipment for the tasks involved. Do not assume that swimming ability or previous sailing experience is required, or that it is unnecessary, without checking the individual listing.
