What is biodynamic farming? 🌱
Biodynamic agriculture developed from a series of lectures given by Rudolf Steiner in 1924. It treats the farm as an interconnected whole and combines organic farming practices with specific biodynamic preparations and other principles associated with the biodynamic tradition. Some approaches also consider lunar or cosmic rhythms. Biodynamic and organic are therefore related but not interchangeable terms.
Biodynamic claims and certification
A host describing a farm as biodynamic does not necessarily mean that it is formally certified. Demeter is an international certification system for biodynamic production, but many small farms may use some biodynamic practices without certification. If this distinction matters to you, ask the host what methods are actually used and whether any certification applies.
The biodynamic label should not by itself be taken as evidence that a farm is more sustainable, productive or environmentally beneficial than another farming system. Individual practices and claims should be considered separately.
