Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition, and autistic people have diverse strengths, experiences and support needs. A project appearing in this archive should have a genuine and clearly described connection with autism rather than simply referring broadly to disability or additional support needs.
Role and safeguarding notice
Autism-specific therapy, assessment, behavioural intervention, personal care or professional support should not be assigned to short-term volunteers without appropriate qualifications, authorisation and supervision. When children are involved, safeguarding, consent, privacy and clear role boundaries should be explicit. Volunteers should support established services rather than replace trained staff.
Autism-related volunteer roles
Depending on the organisation, appropriate roles may involve accessible communications, administration, fundraising, community activities, advocacy, event support or assisting trained educators and professionals within clearly defined boundaries.
Language preferences also vary. Many people prefer identity-first language such as “autistic person”, while others prefer “person with autism”. When referring to an individual, follow their stated preference.
