Alternative Education ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŒฑ

English teaching activity in Thรกi Bรฌnh, Vietnam

Explore alternative education volunteering opportunities involving non-formal learning, experiential education, community programmes, learner-centred activities and other approaches outside or alongside conventional classroom teaching.

Projects may involve schools, NGOs, community centres, learning communities, language programmes, outdoor education or other initiatives. The educational approach, participant role and required qualifications vary considerably between organisations.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm the current educational model, activities and participation requirements directly with the organisation before applying.

What is alternative education?

Alternative education is a broad term for educational approaches that differ in some way from mainstream or conventional schooling. Depending on the context, this may involve non-formal education, experiential learning, project-based activities, outdoor learning, community-based education, learner-led approaches or other forms of teaching and learning.

There is no single alternative education model. Different projects may have very different philosophies, methods and levels of structure, and an approach being described as โ€œalternativeโ€ does not automatically mean that it is more effective or more suitable for every learner.

Possible volunteer activities

Depending on the project, participants may help with:

  • language conversation and informal learning activities;
  • arts, music, crafts or creative workshops;
  • outdoor or environmental education;
  • project-based and hands-on activities;
  • homework or tutoring support;
  • community learning programmes;
  • preparing educational materials;
  • supporting qualified educators during activities.

The listing should explain what participants are actually expected to do. A short-term volunteer should not automatically be placed in charge of a class, provide professional counselling or replace qualified local educators.

Safeguarding and volunteering with children

Many alternative education projects involve children or young people. Appropriate safeguarding procedures, supervision and clear role boundaries are therefore important.

Ask whether the organisation has a safeguarding policy, how participants are supervised and whether references or background checks are required. Volunteers should not be given unnecessary unsupervised one-to-one access to children.

Short-term participation should be organised around the needs and continuity of learners rather than primarily around the visitor’s experience.

For further guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about volunteering with children and safer alternatives.

Qualifications and role boundaries

Some informal learning activities may be suitable for participants without professional teaching qualifications. Other roles, especially formal teaching, special education, counselling or therapeutic support, may require recognised qualifications, experience or local authorisation.

Before applying, ask who designs the educational programme, who supervises volunteers and what responsibilities participants are allowed to undertake independently.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the organisation’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm:

  • the educational approach and age group involved;
  • the exact volunteer role;
  • required qualifications or experience;
  • supervision and safeguarding procedures;
  • weekly hours and days off;
  • programme dates and minimum stay;
  • accommodation and meals;
  • visa, insurance and background-check requirements;
  • any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.

Some opportunities may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

A participant fee does not automatically make an educational programme more or less responsible, effective or appropriate.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and host organisations. It does not process participant payments between travellers and hosts. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an organisation or educational approach.

Visa and legal considerations

Do not assume that tourist or visitor status automatically permits teaching, volunteering or unpaid work. Immigration rules depend on the destination, nationality, organisation and activities involved.

For additional information, read Voluntouring’s guide to visas for volunteering abroad and the general page on safety and legality.
