Organic farms 🌱

Volunteers riding in the back of a farm vehicle with crates of peony stems on a rural road in Alaska

Explore organic farm volunteering opportunities, ecological farming projects and responsible rural work exchanges around the world.

The listings may include certified organic farms, smallholdings, community farms, permaculture projects, regenerative agriculture initiatives and hosts who use ecological growing methods without formal certification.

Some opportunities may be seasonal, archived or no longer available. Always check the date and confirm the current conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.

What does organic farming mean?

Organic farming generally aims to support soil health, biodiversity, animal welfare and the responsible use of natural resources. Common practices may include crop rotation, composting, biological pest management, reduced external inputs and restrictions on genetically modified organisms.

Organic does not necessarily mean pesticide-free or chemical-free. Regulations may allow certain approved fertilisers, pesticides, veterinary treatments and other substances. The applicable rules depend on the country and certification system.

A farm that describes itself as organic, ecological, natural, regenerative or permaculture-based is not necessarily certified. If certification matters to you, ask the host which control body or authority issued it and whether it covers the activities or products described in the listing.

Examples of official requirements are available through the European Commission’s organic farming information and the USDA organic regulations.

Possible activities on an organic farm

Activities vary according to the season, climate and type of farm. Volunteers may be invited to help with:

  • sowing, transplanting and harvesting;
  • weeding, watering and maintaining gardens;
  • composting and improving soil fertility;
  • pruning trees and maintaining orchards;
  • feeding animals and cleaning appropriate animal areas;
  • preparing beds, fencing or irrigation systems;
  • sorting, preserving or preparing farm produce;
  • general maintenance and seasonal farm activities.

The listing should explain which activities are actually expected. Do not assume that every stay includes formal training or that every task is suitable for an inexperienced volunteer.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and check its publication date, application deadline and activity dates. If it still appears current, use the contact details in the listing to communicate directly with the host.

Before accepting an opportunity, request written confirmation of:

  • the current availability and exact location;
  • the identity and legal status of the host;
  • whether the farm is private, community-based or commercial;
  • the specific tasks and expected weekly hours;
  • working times, rest breaks and days off;
  • training, supervision and protective equipment;
  • accommodation, meals and access to drinking water;
  • transport options and distance from essential services;
  • fees, deposits or requested contributions;
  • insurance, visa and entry requirements;
  • cancellation and emergency procedures.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange travel or supervise activities. Publication in this archive does not confirm that a farm is certified organic or guarantee that an opportunity is still active, legal or suitable for every participant.

Before joining an organic farm work exchange

A cultural exchange on a family smallholding or community project is not automatically the same as working for a commercial agricultural business. If a farm sells produce, supplies commercial customers, operates accommodation or relies on volunteers during essential production periods, local employment and immigration rules may apply.

Conditions also vary considerably between hosts. Some provide accommodation and all meals in exchange for a limited number of hours, while others provide accommodation only, shared ingredients or access to farm produce. If a contribution is requested, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and whether it is compulsory or refundable.

Farm activities can involve sharp tools, machinery, ladders, heavy loads, animals, dust, treated crops, heat, cold and uneven terrain. Volunteers should receive appropriate instructions, supervision and protective equipment and should be able to decline tasks that are unsafe or outside the agreed exchange. Do not operate tractors, chainsaws or unfamiliar powered machinery without suitable training and authorisation.

Organic farms may still use approved pest-control products, fertilisers, disinfectants or veterinary treatments. Ask which products are used and whether there are restrictions on entering treated areas. Animal care can also involve bites, kicks, scratches and exposure to zoonotic diseases, so appropriate supervision is important.

Tourist entry permission should not automatically be assumed to allow every type of farm volunteering or work exchange. Check the official immigration requirements for your destination and choose insurance that covers the activities you expect to perform, particularly manual agricultural work, animal handling or machinery.

For further guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
