Opportunities can be found across Scotland, including the Highlands, islands, rural communities and larger towns and cities. Some listings are seasonal or archival, so always check the publication date and confirm current availability directly with the host or organisation.

Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.

Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may offer only part of these arrangements. Do not assume that every opportunity includes free food and accommodation.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or immigration permission, or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.

Volunteering as a visitor in Scotland

Scotland follows UK immigration rules. Under the current Standard Visitor rules, a visitor may volunteer for up to 30 days in total with a charity registered with an appropriate UK charity regulator, including the Scottish Charity Regulator.

This permission applies to genuine volunteering with registered charities and should not be interpreted as permission to carry out any form of unpaid work.

UK guidance distinguishes genuine volunteering from voluntary work that resembles employment. A visitor should not use volunteering as a way to fill a position that would normally be carried out by a paid worker.

Charity Worker visa

People coming to Scotland specifically to undertake longer or more structured voluntary work for a charitable organisation may need the Temporary Work – Charity Worker visa.

This route requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved sponsor. The voluntary activity must contribute directly to the charitable purpose of the sponsoring organisation and qualifying participants can stay for up to 12 months.

The Charity Worker route is not intended to provide unpaid replacements for normal salaried positions.

Hostel, farm and hospitality exchanges

Some Scotland listings on Voluntouring involve hostels, farms, accommodation providers and other private or commercial hosts. These exchanges should not automatically be treated in the same way as volunteering for a registered charity.

Regular reception shifts, housekeeping, cleaning, food service, agricultural work, maintenance or other duties normally carried out by employees may raise different immigration and employment questions, even when the participant receives accommodation or meals instead of wages.

Terms such as “volunteer”, “work exchange”, “hostel volunteer” or “help for accommodation” do not by themselves determine whether an activity is permitted under UK immigration rules.

If the proposed exchange involves regular duties for a business, check the actual tasks and hours carefully and verify the applicable rules before travelling.

ETA, visas and entry requirements

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and immigration status. Many travellers who do not require a visitor visa, including most EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK.

An ETA is permission to travel to the UK. It does not provide additional permission to work or carry out activities that are not permitted under the Visitor rules.

Before accepting an opportunity

Ask the host to confirm:

the identity and legal status of the host;
whether it is a registered charity, non-profit organisation, private host or commercial business;
the exact activities and weekly hours;
days off and supervision arrangements;
accommodation and sleeping arrangements;
meals and other included expenses;
any fees, deposits or contributions;
insurance arrangements;
which immigration permission applies to international participants.

If the proposed activities resemble regular employment, verify the immigration requirements independently rather than relying only on the terminology or assurances used by the host.

Insurance and practical arrangements

Make sure your insurance covers the activities you will actually perform. Farming, construction, animal care, sailing, hiking, outdoor work, driving and other practical activities may require additional coverage.

Some projects are located in remote parts of Scotland or on islands. Confirm transport arrangements in advance and keep sufficient personal funds for travel or alternative accommodation if an exchange ends earlier than expected.
