Visas and volunteering in Madagascar

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and planned activities. Madagascar’s official electronic visa system currently supports tourist eVisas, so a tourist visa should not automatically be assumed to permit every form of structured volunteering, employment or work exchange.

Check current entry requirements through the official Madagascar eVisa portal. If your activities go beyond tourism, ask the host which immigration arrangement applies and verify it independently before travelling.

Travel and practical considerations

Some projects may eventually be located in rural or remote areas where roads, transport, communications and access to healthcare can be limited. Security conditions also vary by region, particularly on some roads in southern and western Madagascar.

Madagascar’s cyclone season normally runs from November to April and can disrupt transport and access to remote areas. Check the exact project location and consult current travel advice for Madagascar before departure.
