Do you want to make a lasting impact when you volunteer as an
English teacher? Here is one way to do it!
An excellent and easy way to give variation and to improve teaching in a school that
lacks resources like computers and maybe even electricity is to bring a few memory
sticks with songs (sound files) and a couple of blue tooth speakers with rechargeable
batteries. Most teachers have some kind of smart phone these days and thatÂīs all it
takes since blue tooth technology doesnât need wifi or internet.
You can of course write the lyrics on the board, but if you are willing to spend some
more money you can also buy a simple laminating machine. I brought about 30
copies each of two double paged pdf documents with lyrics to some 20 songs. The
laminated copies are of high quality and made to last. The teachers can therefore go
on playing the songs with copies of laminated lyrics distributed in their classes for a
long time. It was a very popular contribution to the school where I volunteered.
This is the laminating machine I used
and you can also see a couple of
laminated copies.
The songs in this little collection are
filled with suitable vocabulary and/or
grammar and will be of great help to
learn English. Have a look for yourself
and watch the film for ideas about how
to work with the songs in your classes.
Please note that there are a number of
songs (23-31) that donât have lyrics
written down. They can be used in
Kindergarten.
Here you can see how much I spent on material, about 80 USD:
Laminating machine 25 USD
100 plastic copies for laminating 16 USD
2 small blue tooth speakers 2x 20 USD
