The story behind Morocco Animal Aid

Morocco Animal Aid (MAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating stray and injured animals in Morocco.

It was founded by Lucy Austin, an Australian who moved to the surfing town of Taghazout. The catalyst for MAA was simple yet profound: three sick and injured dogs living outside her house needed help, and she couldn’t ignore them. Without the means to cover their medical costs, Lucy turned to social media for donations, which marked the beginning of what would become Morocco Animal Aidโ€‹.

Lucyโ€™s initial efforts quickly gained traction, leading to the formation of a small group of like-minded individuals.

Over time, what began in her home expanded to a larger space in Assersif, accommodating over 120 dogs and 30 cats. The organization now relies on the help of around 50 volunteers annually and runs entirely on donations.

Lucy is joined by Fanny Belle, a French national, whose compassion for the street animals she encountered in Morocco inspired her to co-found MAA. Both founders are driven by the vision of creating a lasting impact on animal welfare in Morocco, addressing the overpopulation of stray animals through initiatives like the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program.
