Teaching English in Thailand with Volunteer English Bangkok (min. 2â3 months)
Volunteer English Bangkok is a non-profit organization that has been sending volunteer teachers to small government schools across Thailand since 2010. Many of these schools have limited budgets and few, if any, qualified English teachers, so your presence can make a real difference to the childrenâs future opportunities.
The organization works with public schools and rural communities, reaching many students each year through fun, conversation-based English lessons and cultural exchange activities.
From time to time there are special projects in rural areas that include free accommodation and a modest monthly reimbursement to help with local living costs, often for volunteers who stay at least 2â3 months. Exact conditions, locations and any stipends change from year to year, so you should always confirm the current offer directly with Volunteer English Bangkok before you apply.
Who they are looking for
This opportunity is ideal if you:
- Speak fluent English and enjoy working with children and teenagers
- Can commit to at least 2â3 months in Thailand
- Are open to living simply and following a local school schedule
- Are willing to prepare creative, activity-based lessons
Your role as a volunteer teacher
As a volunteer teacher you support local Thai teachers in small classes and help students practise spoken English. Lessons focus on games, songs, role plays and everyday communication rather than grammar only. You might teach at primary schools in Bangkok or in rural schools in other provinces, depending on current projects and your preferences. The team tries to give volunteers enough time for lesson preparation, so your teaching schedule is usually balanced with free time for exploring and cultural activities.
What you gain
You will gain practical teaching experience, a deeper understanding of Thai culture and a certificate of participation from the NGO. Many volunteers also take part in community events, temple visits and cultural trips organized by the local team. Past participants often describe the experience as life changing and highlight the warm welcome from students, teachers and host families.
Our commitment (from Volunteer English Bangkok)
- Give Thai students real practice speaking English with friendly foreign volunteers.
- Motivate students through enjoyable, activity-based learning, not only textbooks.
- Help young people experience the value of social responsibility.
Mission
Volunteer English Bangkok offers placements in carefully selected schools where volunteers are most needed. The aim is not to become a huge organization, but to keep a flexible, well-organized program that supports under-resourced schools and gives volunteers space to use creative teaching methods.
Note: This opportunity was originally published in 2019 as a âpaid volunteeringâ project with a small monthly reimbursement. As of 2025, the program still runs in different parts of Thailand, but placements, fees and reimbursements can vary. Always check the latest information on the official website before making travel plans.
