Sierra Leone has a past deeply marked by British colonisation and the slave trade. Freetown, the capital, was founded in the 18th century as a refuge for freed slaves.
In the 1990s, the country was ravaged by a bloody civil war that left deep wounds and delayed economic development.
In recent years, Sierra Leone has embarked on a path of reconstruction and stabilisation, although many challenges remain.
