Explore winery volunteer opportunities and work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. where wine production, cellar activities or the day-to-day operation of a winery form a genuine part of the experience. Some projects combine winemaking with vineyards, farming, guest accommodation or other rural activities.
Activities vary according to the season and the winery. A listing may involve practical cellar support, cleaning equipment, preparing spaces, hospitality or helping with other farm and vineyard tasks.
What is a winery? 🍷
A winery is a place where wine is produced or processed. It may include facilities for crushing grapes, fermentation, ageing, storage or bottling. A vineyard, by comparison, is the land where grapevines are grown. Many wine estates include both a vineyard and a winery, but the terms are not interchangeable.
Volunteering at a winery
Depending on the host and season, volunteers may help clean or prepare winery spaces and equipment, move materials, support hospitality activities or assist with general farm tasks. During harvest periods, some projects may also involve grape picking, sorting or other activities connected with processing the harvest.
Winemaking facilities can involve machinery, heavy containers, wet floors, cleaning products and fermentation areas. Ask which tasks volunteers are permitted to perform, what supervision is provided and whether protective equipment or previous experience is required.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm current activities, harvest dates if relevant, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or compensation directly with the host.
A winery exchange is not automatically the same as a grape-harvest opportunity. If picking grapes or learning about winemaking is important to you, confirm that these activities will actually take place during your stay.
Regular productive work at a commercial winery may be subject to employment, age and immigration rules even when accommodation or meals are provided in exchange. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of a winery, employer or work exchange.
