Wildlife 🐘🌱
Explore wildlife volunteer opportunities involving wild animals, wildlife rehabilitation, monitoring, research, conservation, habitat work and related educational activities. Projects may take place at rehabilitation centres, sanctuaries, field sites, protected areas or other organisations working directly with wild species.
Roles vary considerably. Some involve animal care under supervision, while others focus on observation, data collection, habitat management, education, fundraising or organisational support.
What counts as wildlife volunteering? 🐘🌱
Wildlife volunteering involves activities directly connected with wild animals, their populations or their habitats. This can include rehabilitation, species monitoring, field research, habitat work, coexistence projects or wildlife education. Simply seeing wild animals near a volunteer project or visiting wildlife attractions during free time does not by itself make an opportunity a wildlife project.
Working with wildlife
Activities may include preparing food, cleaning rehabilitation facilities, monitoring animals, recording observations, supporting releases, maintaining habitats or assisting research and education programmes. Some roles require previous animal-care, veterinary, ecological or research experience, while others provide supervised introductory tasks.
Direct contact with wildlife is not appropriate in every project. Handling wild animals can involve stress for the animal as well as risks such as bites, scratches and zoonotic disease. Ask about supervision, animal welfare protocols, protective equipment and which activities volunteers are actually permitted to perform.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the species involved, current activities, qualifications, training, supervision, working hours, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the organisation.
If conservation is an important reason for applying, ask how the volunteer role connects with the organisation’s conservation, rehabilitation or research objectives. Wildlife care, tourism and conservation are not automatically the same activity.
Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of an organisation’s wildlife, conservation, rehabilitation or animal welfare claims.
