What is a walipini greenhouse?
A walipini greenhouse is an underground greenhouse that helps plants grow even in cold places. It’s built partially or completely underground, which makes it energy-efficient and low-cost. The soil around it acts like a natural blanket, keeping it warm in winter and cool in summer.
The greenhouse has a slanted roof and glass or plastic on one side. The slant helps sunlight come in at a good angle, and the glass or plastic traps the sun’s heat inside, like a warm blanket. The other side is buried in the ground, which helps keep it insulated and sturdy.
People use walipini greenhouses to grow plants all year round, like vegetables, herbs, and fruits. They protect the plants from bad weather, like frost and strong winds. And because they’re underground, they don’t need as much energy to stay warm.
Walipini greenhouses are popular because they’re affordable and work well in cold areas. They let people grow their own food, even in places where it’s usually hard to do so.
