What is tai chi (taijiquan)? 🌿
Tai chi, also known as taijiquan, is a traditional Chinese martial art practised through coordinated movements, balance, posture and focused attention. It is practised for martial training, physical exercise and personal wellbeing. Different styles and teaching approaches exist, from gentle movement sequences to more demanding martial applications. Tai chi shares some characteristics with qigong, but the two practices are not identical.
Teaching and practising tai chi while volunteering
Depending on the host, volunteers may lead classes, assist with workshops, help organise cultural activities or take part in guided sessions during their stay. Some opportunities require previous teaching experience or recognised training.
If learning tai chi is important to you, ask whether lessons are regularly offered, who leads them and whether participation is included in the exchange. If you intend to teach, confirm the expected level, group size, supervision and any relevant qualifications.
