Storytelling 📖🎙️
Explore storytelling volunteer opportunities involving creative writing, oral storytelling, community narratives, digital media and cultural exchange.
Storytelling activities may take place in community organisations, cultural projects, educational programmes and creative workshops. Volunteers may help develop stories, document local experiences, facilitate activities or produce audio, video and written material.
What is storytelling? 📖🎙️
Storytelling is the practice of communicating stories through spoken words, writing, images, performance, audio or video. Stories may be fictional, personal, historical or based on community experiences. Storytelling can support cultural exchange, education, creative expression and the documentation of experiences, depending on the context and purpose.
Storytelling and volunteering
Depending on the project, volunteers may facilitate storytelling workshops, help develop educational stories, interview community members, document experiences or support collaborative creative activities.
For example, Fundación Territorial Shamuy in Peru describes audiovisual storytelling as part of its community work. Kipos Filias in Greece includes storytelling among the creative activities to which volunteers may contribute.
Storytelling is not necessarily journalism or social media management. Some projects focus on oral traditions and creative expression, while others use interviews, photographs and videos to document and communicate experiences.
