Explore Shiatsu volunteering opportunities and cultural exchanges where this Japanese bodywork practice is part of the activities, workshops or skills that hosts welcome volunteers to share.
Some communities, retreat centres and wellness projects may welcome experienced Shiatsu practitioners to offer sessions, share their knowledge or participate in workshops. Others may include Shiatsu among several practices available to participants, alongside massage, yoga and other forms of bodywork.
What is Shiatsu? 🙌
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork based on applying pressure with the fingers, thumbs and palms, sometimes combined with gentle stretching and assisted movement. The word Shiatsu means “finger pressure” in Japanese. Sessions are usually performed through comfortable clothing. Different schools follow different techniques and traditions, including approaches influenced by East Asian medicine.
Shiatsu and cultural exchange
Depending on the host, volunteers with relevant experience may share Shiatsu techniques, support workshops or participate in organised sessions. Some projects may welcome beginners interested in learning, while others require prior training or professional qualifications.
If Shiatsu is an important part of the experience you are looking for, ask whether sessions are regularly organised, who leads them and whether volunteers are expected to practise, teach or simply participate.
How to use this page
Check each listing’s publication date and confirm the current activities, required experience, supervision, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
Shiatsu involves physical contact, so informed consent, privacy, appropriate training and professional boundaries are important. If volunteers are expected to provide sessions to guests or clients, check the local professional requirements, insurance coverage and legal conditions of the role.
Shiatsu should not be presented as a proven cure for medical conditions or as a substitute for appropriate healthcare. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of a practitioner, project or therapeutic claim.
