Explore shepherding volunteer opportunities and rural work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. where volunteers can help care for flocks, manage grazing areas and learn about traditional pastoral life.
Some projects involve working alongside shepherds on sheep or goat farms, while others offer experience with livestock management, rotational grazing, mountain farming and related rural activities. The responsibilities and experience required vary between hosts.
What is shepherding? 🐑🌿
Shepherding is the practice of caring for and managing flocks of sheep, particularly while they graze. It includes guiding animals between pastures, monitoring their health and behaviour, providing water and protection, and maintaining grazing areas. Similar pastoral activities also involve goats and other livestock. In some regions, seasonal movements between grazing areas are part of traditional pastoral life.
Volunteering with shepherds
Depending on the project, volunteers may help move animals between pastures, maintain fences, provide water, clean shelters, prepare feed or assist with other daily livestock routines. Some farms also introduce participants to milking, cheesemaking, wool processing and traditional agricultural practices.
Working with a flock requires attention to animal behaviour, terrain, weather and the instructions of experienced handlers. Not every livestock farm offers actual shepherding experience, so ask which activities volunteers will perform.
