What is sanitation? 🚰🚽
Sanitation refers to the facilities, services and practices used to manage human waste safely and protect public health. It includes access to toilets, safe collection and treatment of wastewater and sewage, and appropriate management of human excreta. Sanitation is closely connected with clean water and personal hygiene, but each addresses different aspects of public health.
Sanitation volunteering and community projects
Depending on the organisation, volunteers may support sanitation awareness campaigns, educational activities, community workshops or practical improvements to sanitation facilities. Some projects involve latrine construction, maintenance, wastewater systems or the introduction of alternative sanitation technologies.
Technical activities involving sewage, contaminated materials, plumbing or sanitation infrastructure require appropriate skills, protective equipment and supervision. Volunteers should not undertake specialised or hazardous work without suitable training.
