These opportunities may appear within community health, schools, humanitarian programmes, public health organisations or projects working on water and sanitation.
What counts as hygiene volunteering? ๐งผ๐ง
On this page, hygiene means activities intended to help maintain health and reduce the spread of disease, such as handwashing education, hygiene awareness, supporting appropriate hygiene facilities or participating in community hygiene programmes. Ordinary cleaning duties or the simple presence of toilets and washing facilities are not enough on their own.
Hygiene, cleaning and WASH
Hygiene can overlap with several other areas but is not the same thing. Cleaning focuses on keeping rooms, accommodation and other spaces clean and organised. Hygiene is more specifically connected with practices that protect health and help prevent disease. Water, sanitation and hygiene are often grouped together as WASH, so projects on this page may also appear under Water or Healthcare when those activities are genuinely part of the programme.
How to use this page
Read each listing to understand what the hygiene component actually involves. Volunteers might support awareness activities, handwashing programmes, community outreach or practical water and sanitation initiatives. Ask what training and supervision are provided and whether the activities require previous public health or technical experience.
Projects involving healthcare facilities, disease outbreaks, medical waste, contaminated water or other biological hazards require appropriate procedures and protective equipment. Volunteers should not take on specialist infection-control, medical or sanitation work beyond their training and experience.
