Explore Quechua language volunteer opportunities and cultural exchanges where travellers can practise, learn or become more familiar with Quechua while spending time with local families, communities or organisations.
Quechua is spoken in several parts of the Andes and includes different regional varieties. The language used in a particular project may therefore vary considerably according to the country and community.
What is Quechua? 🗣️
Quechua is a family of closely related Indigenous languages spoken in several parts of South America, particularly in the Andean region. Different communities use different varieties and names. In Ecuador, for example, you will often encounter the name Kichwa. If learning the language is important to you, ask which variety is spoken locally and how much opportunity you will actually have to practise it.
Learning Quechua through cultural exchange
Some volunteer experiences offer informal language practice through everyday life with local families or communities, while others may include more deliberate language exchange. Ask whether anyone is available to help you learn and which language is normally used during volunteer activities.
Language learning can be one part of a wider experience involving teaching, agriculture, crafts, community activities or cultural exchange. Basic Spanish may also be useful or necessary in many projects.
