Explore nutrition volunteering opportunities involving nutrition education, community health, food programmes, malnutrition prevention or other projects where nutrition is a genuine part of the volunteer role or organisation’s work.
Activities can range from supporting community workshops and food programmes to assisting qualified professionals with research, education or public-health initiatives. The exact role and required background vary considerably between projects.
What is nutrition? 🥗
Nutrition concerns how food and nutrients support health, growth and development. It includes adequate intake of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals as well as the prevention and management of different forms of malnutrition. Individual nutritional needs vary according to factors such as age, health, activity, culture and locally available foods.
Nutrition roles and qualifications
General food education and community activities are different from clinical nutrition or personalised dietary advice. Roles involving medical conditions, pregnancy, children, malnutrition treatment or therapeutic diets should have appropriate professional supervision and clearly defined responsibilities. Volunteers should not present themselves as qualified nutrition professionals unless they hold the relevant training and authorisation.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm what nutrition-related activities are actually expected, what qualifications are required and who provides supervision. Also verify the schedule, accommodation, meals, minimum stay, fees and other current participation conditions directly with the organisation.
Some older projects may involve children or other vulnerable groups. Ask about safeguarding, consent, privacy and professional role boundaries before participating.
