What is a non-profit organisation?
A non-profit organisation generally exists primarily to pursue a social, educational, cultural, environmental, humanitarian or other mission rather than distribute profits to private owners or shareholders.
The exact legal definition, registration requirements and permitted activities vary considerably between countries. Being described as “non-profit” does not by itself confirm that an organisation is formally registered or independently verified.
Non-profit organisations can include charities, associations, foundations, community groups and some non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The terms overlap, but they are not always legally interchangeable.
