What is a non-profit hostel? 🛌🤝
A non-profit hostel is a hostel operated by a non-profit organisation or structured so that its surplus supports the organisation or a stated non-profit purpose rather than being distributed to private owners. Simply offering volunteer exchanges, supporting a charity or providing low-cost accommodation does not automatically make a hostel non-profit. Legal structures vary between countries.

If non-profit status matters to you, ask for the registered organisation name or other relevant information rather than relying only on an informal description.
Non-profit status does not automatically make every hostel activity volunteering. Regular reception, housekeeping, food service or other operational duties may still be subject to local labour and immigration rules.
