Explore Marathi language volunteer opportunities in Maharashtra and other settings where Marathi is spoken locally or forms part of the cultural and community experience.
Projects may involve rural communities, farms, NGOs, homestays or cultural exchanges where volunteers hear or use Marathi alongside English, Hindi or other languages. Formal language lessons should not be assumed unless the host specifically offers them.
What is Marathi? 🗣️
Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken primarily in Maharashtra in western India. It is the official language of Maharashtra and is normally written in the Devanagari script. Marathi is used in everyday communication, education, administration, literature and media across the state.
Marathi in volunteer projects
International volunteers do not necessarily need to speak Marathi. In some projects English is used for coordination, while Marathi becomes more relevant during village visits, community activities or everyday interaction with local residents.
If learning or practising the language is important to you, ask whether the host offers structured lessons, informal conversation practice or simply opportunities to hear Marathi during daily life.
