Explore living without money projects and volunteer opportunities connected with communities, exchanges and alternative lifestyles that experiment with reducing the role of money in everyday life.
Arrangements can involve shared resources, barter, hospitality, mutual help, food production, reuse or exchanges of time and skills. The practical reality varies considerably between projects, and living with very little money is not the same as having no expenses or responsibilities.
What does living without money mean? 🤝🌱
Living without money describes attempts to meet everyday needs with little or no direct use of currency. Approaches can involve sharing, barter, gift economies, self-provisioning, hospitality, mutual aid and reducing consumption, although complete independence from monetary systems is unusual.
Living without money, freeganism and self-sufficiency
These ideas overlap but are not identical. Freeganism focuses particularly on reducing waste and consumption, including recovering usable food or goods that would otherwise be discarded. Self-sufficiency is more concerned with producing or providing for one’s own needs.
Living without money is broader and can also involve barter, shared ownership, hospitality or gift-based exchange. It should therefore describe a meaningful part of the project’s economic or everyday lifestyle rather than simply an opportunity that provides free accommodation.
How to use this page
Check the publication date, current availability, expected activities, weekly hours, accommodation, meals and what personal expenses you will still need to cover. Ask clearly how food, transport, medical needs and other essentials are handled rather than assuming that a “moneyless” project provides everything.
Even when the aim is to travel or live with very little money, having access to emergency funds can be important for transport, documents, healthcare or leaving an arrangement unexpectedly. Voluntouring’s guide to travelling with no money discusses these practical limits in more detail.
If the arrangement involves regular work in exchange for accommodation, meals or other benefits, also check the immigration and employment rules that apply in the destination.
