Explore group volunteering opportunities designed to welcome several participants travelling or volunteering together.

Group projects may be suitable for friends, associations, student groups, community organisations, teams or other people applying together. The maximum group size, activities and practical arrangements vary considerably between hosts.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current availability directly with the host before organising a group trip.

What is group volunteering?

Group volunteering generally refers to opportunities where a host can accommodate and organise activities for several participants at the same time. In some cases the group joins an existing project, while in others the host may arrange specific dates or activities for a pre-formed team.

A group opportunity may involve environmental work, community activities, farming, conservation, renovation, cultural exchange, events or other forms of practical support. Always check what the group will actually be doing rather than assuming that all participants will have the same role.

What to confirm before organising a group

Before applying, confirm:

the minimum and maximum group size;
available dates and minimum stay;
the activities and expected weekly hours;
whether tasks are suitable for everyone’s age, skills and physical abilities;
accommodation and room arrangements;
meals and dietary arrangements;
local transport and arrival procedures;
whether a group leader or coordinator is required;
insurance and emergency procedures;
any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.

For larger groups, ask whether the host has enough accommodation, supervision, equipment and meaningful activities for the number of participants expected.

Participant fees and group costs

Some group volunteering opportunities may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. Group programmes may also include additional arrangements such as transport, activities, accommodation or coordination.

If payment is required, ask for the exact amount per participant, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

A participant fee does not automatically make a programme more or less responsible, ethical or worthwhile.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Safeguarding and responsible group activities

Projects involving children, vulnerable people, healthcare or other sensitive activities require appropriate safeguarding, supervision and role boundaries. Travelling as a group does not remove the need for individual qualifications, background checks or professional supervision where these are required.

If participants are minors, the organiser should confirm supervision, parental consent, accommodation arrangements, safeguarding responsibilities and any additional legal requirements directly with the host and relevant authorities.

Travel and visa arrangements

Each participant should check whether the planned activities are permitted under their immigration status. Travelling as part of a group does not automatically create a special exemption from visa, work or volunteering requirements.
