What are gorillas? 🦍
Gorillas are great apes native to equatorial Africa. There are two recognised species, the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). Their recognised subspecies include mountain gorillas, Grauer’s gorillas, western lowland gorillas and Cross River gorillas.
Gorilla conservation and volunteer roles
Depending on the organisation, participants may assist with habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, data entry, community conservation, communications, fundraising or environmental education. Scientific fieldwork, veterinary care and specialist wildlife activities should remain under appropriate professional supervision.
Close contact with gorillas should not be expected from an ordinary volunteer placement. Great apes are vulnerable to diseases that can be transmitted by humans, so projects working in gorilla habitat should follow clear health and field procedures. Gorilla trekking or visiting a national park during free time is a tourism activity and does not by itself make an opportunity a gorilla conservation project.
