Some opportunities may support gorilla conservation indirectly through forest protection, community programmes, research assistance or conservation education rather than through direct work with the animals.
What are gorillas? 🦍
Gorillas are great apes native to equatorial Africa. There are two recognised species, the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), with several subspecies including mountain gorillas, Grauer’s gorillas, western lowland gorillas and Cross River gorillas.
Gorilla conservation and volunteer roles
Depending on the organisation, participants may assist with habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, data entry, community conservation, communications, fundraising or environmental education. Scientific fieldwork, veterinary care and specialist wildlife activities should remain under appropriate professional supervision.
Close contact with gorillas should not be expected from an ordinary volunteer placement. Great apes can be vulnerable to diseases transmitted by humans, and conservation guidance emphasises limiting close human contact. Projects involving gorilla habitat should have clear health, distance and field procedures. See the IUCN guidance on great ape health and disease prevention.
Gorilla trekking or visiting a national park during free time is a tourism activity and does not by itself make an opportunity a gorilla conservation project.
