Explore general help volunteering opportunities where volunteers contribute to a mixture of everyday practical tasks rather than one specialised activity. These roles can be found in private homes, communities, hostels, farms, retreats and many other types of projects.
Activities vary according to the host and may include cleaning, organising shared spaces, gardening, preparing meals, light maintenance, hospitality support or other practical tasks agreed in advance.
What does general help mean? 🧹🛠️
General help usually means contributing to several small practical activities rather than filling one specialised role. Tasks should still be described clearly enough for participants to understand what they are agreeing to do. A general help role should not mean unlimited duties or major changes to the agreed activities after arrival.
General help and more specialised roles
General help can overlap with cleaning, gardening, DIY or hospitality. It is most useful when the volunteer is genuinely expected to help with a mixture of activities. If a role consists mainly of one clearly defined task, the more specific activity tag may be more useful.
General help should also be distinguished from work exchange. General help describes the activities involved, while work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. describes an arrangement in which agreed help is exchanged for accommodation, meals or other benefits.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current tasks, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or compensation directly with the host. Ask for clarification if a listing uses broad terms such as “help with whatever is needed” without explaining the normal activities.
If the role involves regular reception, housekeeping, food service, maintenance or other productive work for a commercial activity, also check the labour and immigration requirements that may apply. For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
