Projects may range from small family farms and homesteads to larger agricultural properties, community farms and mixed rural projects. Some listings may also involve organic or regenerative practices, while others follow more conventional farming methods.

Some opportunities may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm the current activities and conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm the farm tasks, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, local transport, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee and may include accommodation or meals. Others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity.

Farm exchange or agricultural employment?

A small-scale cultural or farm exchange is not necessarily the same as agricultural employment. Regular productive work for a commercial farm, particularly when it involves fixed shifts, essential seasonal labour or duties normally carried out by paid staff, may be treated as work under local employment and immigration rules.

Accommodation and meals do not automatically make an agricultural arrangement volunteering. Before travelling, confirm whether your planned activities are permitted under your immigration status.

Farm safety and working conditions

Farm work can involve machinery, tools, animals, chemicals, heavy lifting, uneven ground and exposure to heat, cold or other weather conditions. Ask what training, protective equipment and supervision will be provided.

Volunteers should not operate unfamiliar machinery, handle pesticides or undertake veterinary, electrical or other specialised work without appropriate training and supervision.

Make sure your insurance covers the agricultural and outdoor activities included in the exchange.
