What is an educational farm? 🌱🚜
An educational farm is a farm where learning and knowledge sharing are a meaningful part of the project, for example through workshops, demonstrations, training, school visits or structured practical learning. A farm should not receive this tag simply because volunteers learn how to perform ordinary farm tasks during their stay.
Learning and practical farm work
The balance between education and productive work varies. Before joining, ask what volunteers are expected to learn, who provides instruction and how much time is spent on routine agricultural work. Training or accommodation does not automatically change the legal status of regular productive work, particularly on a commercial farm.
Farm activities may involve animals, tools, machinery, heavy lifting, uneven ground or agricultural products. Ask what supervision, instruction and protective equipment are provided. If volunteers take part in educational activities involving children, also check safeguarding procedures, supervision and rules concerning photographs and privacy.
