Volunteer activities may include hospitality, gardening, maintenance, housekeeping, food preparation, communications, conservation or practical work connected with developing or operating the property.
What counts as an eco-lodge? 🛖🍃
An eco-lodge is generally a guest accommodation project that presents an explicit ecological or environmental approach to how the property is built or operated. On Voluntouring, the Eco lodges tag is not an environmental certification. A rural lodge, farm, retreat or accommodation surrounded by nature should not receive the tag unless an eco-lodge or clearly defined ecological accommodation model is genuinely part of the project.
Eco-lodge claims and volunteer activities
Environmental practices can vary considerably between properties. If this aspect matters to you, ask about energy, water, wastewater, waste management, building materials, food sourcing, habitat protection and how the host explains or measures its environmental approach.
The volunteer role may still be ordinary hospitality or maintenance rather than environmental work. Read the individual listing to understand what participants actually do.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
Some eco-lodges are commercial accommodation businesses. If volunteers perform regular reception, housekeeping, food-service or guest-management shifts, also check whether the arrangement is compatible with local labour and immigration rules.
For remote properties, ask about transport, drinking water, electricity, internet access, healthcare and emergency arrangements. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute certification or endorsement of an eco-lodge or its environmental claims.
