On Voluntouring, this tag is used when donkeys are actually present and their care, handling or welfare forms a meaningful part of the volunteer role. A project should not receive the tag simply because a donkey lives on the property or is mentioned only incidentally.
Donkey care and welfare
Donkeys have specific nutritional, behavioural, social and hoof-care needs. Ask how the animals are housed, fed and monitored, what veterinary and farriery support is available and which tasks volunteers are allowed to perform.
Where donkeys are used for riding, trekking, transport or carrying loads, check that workloads, equipment, access to water, shade, rest and the condition of the animals are appropriate. Veterinary treatment and specialist rehabilitation should remain with appropriately qualified professionals.
