Explore dog sledding volunteer opportunities, work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. and seasonal jobs involving sled dogs, husky kennels, winter tourism and mushing activities in cold-climate regions.

Depending on the host or organisation, participants may help care for sled dogs, maintain kennels and equipment, prepare teams, support winter activities or, in some cases, work as trained handlers or guides.

Dog sledding, also known as dog sledging or mushing, has a long history as a form of transport in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Today it may also be practised as a working activity, sport or form of winter tourism.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current roles, animal-care practices and working conditions directly with the host or employer before making travel plans.

What can working with sled dogs involve?

Activities vary considerably between kennels and operators. Depending on the role, participants may help with:

• feeding dogs and providing fresh water;
• cleaning kennels, dog houses and working areas;
• general dog care and observation;
• preparing harnesses, sleds and other equipment;
• helping prepare teams before and after runs;
• exercise or training under experienced supervision;
• trail, snow and kennel maintenance;
• welcoming or assisting guests at tourism operations;
• other practical activities connected with the kennel or wider project.

Guiding dog sledding tours, independently driving teams, training dogs or dealing with injured or behaviourally challenging animals may require previous experience, training or professional supervision.

Dog sledding volunteering or seasonal employment?

Not every opportunity involving sled dogs is a volunteer exchange. Commercial kennels, lodges and tour operators may recruit paid seasonal workers for positions such as kennel assistant, husky handler, musher or outdoor guide.

Read the individual announcement carefully to understand whether the arrangement is volunteering, a hospitality exchange, an internship or paid employment.

For paid positions, confirm the salary or hourly rate, contract, working hours, days off, accommodation costs, meals, insurance and any deductions directly with the employer.

For volunteer or work-exchange arrangements, confirm what accommodation and meals are provided, the expected workload and whether any participant fee, deposit or other contribution is required.

Commercial guiding, kennel work and other regular duties may be considered employment under local labour or immigration rules even if accommodation is included. Check which visa or work authorisation applies to your nationality and intended activities before travelling.

Evaluating sled dog welfare

Before applying, ask how the dogs are housed and cared for throughout the year, including outside the main winter season.

Useful questions include:

• how much regular exercise and social interaction the dogs receive;
• how their fitness and health are assessed before working;
• how workloads and rest periods are determined;
• what veterinary care is available;
• what type of housing and shelter is provided;
• how harnesses and other equipment are fitted and maintained;
• what happens when a dog is injured or temporarily unable to work;
• how older and retired dogs are cared for;
• whether volunteers receive training before handling unfamiliar dogs.

A dog’s willingness to run should not be treated as the only measure of welfare. Housing, health, rest, social needs, handling and long-term care are also important parts of responsible sled dog management.

Safety in sled dog and winter projects

Working with sled dogs can involve unfamiliar animals, sleds, harnesses, snowmobiles, icy surfaces, heavy equipment, remote locations and very cold weather.

Ask what training and supervision are provided and what cold-weather clothing or protective equipment you are expected to bring. Do not independently drive a sled team or handle dogs beyond your level of experience.

Remote winter work can also make access to transport and medical assistance more difficult. Confirm emergency procedures, communication options and the distance to essential services before accepting a placement.

Make sure your insurance covers the activities involved, particularly animal handling, outdoor work, winter sports or paid employment where applicable.
