Conservation projects 🌿
Explore conservation volunteering opportunities involving the protection, monitoring or restoration of wildlife, habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity. Projects may take place in forests, wetlands, marine environments, protected areas, community-managed landscapes and other natural settings.
Conservation is more specific than general environmental volunteering. This tag should be used when the project has a clear connection with biodiversity, habitat protection, ecological restoration, species monitoring or another defined conservation activity.
What is conservation? 🌿
Conservation involves protecting and managing biodiversity, species, habitats and ecosystems, as well as restoring ecological conditions where they have been damaged. In volunteer projects this can include habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, field surveys, invasive-species work, tree or native-plant activities, marine conservation and support for ecological research. A project being described as “green” or located in nature does not automatically make it a conservation project.
Wildlife, fieldwork and safety
Conservation does not necessarily involve direct contact with animals. Volunteers may contribute through observation, camera traps, data collection, habitat work, trail maintenance or environmental education. If wildlife is captured, handled, tagged or rehabilitated, ask why this is necessary, who supervises the work and whether the required permits and specialist expertise are in place.
Fieldwork can involve remote terrain, wildlife, water, tools, heat, cold or physically demanding activities. Confirm what training, protective equipment and insurance are required, particularly for diving, boats, climbing, wildlife handling or other specialist activities.
